Striptease is not just another Showgirls, but it comes close

Showgirls flaunted its NC-17 rating and tried to get viewers into the theaters. Even with showing full nudity and sex, the movie flopped. Maybe it's because the movie had no plot, the acting was bad by everyone except Elizabeth Berkley, and the movie wasn't erotic. Now, Striptease, which is rated R, comes out. And this one is slightly better.

Striptease stars Demi Moore as a single mother fighting a custody case. The judge rules that her daughter (played by her real-life daughter) should go to her ex-husband because he is an informant for a secret agency (or something). And besides, he has a job. So, she becomes, what else? A stripper.

The plot of the movie is very intriquite. It contains many sub-plots that all interrelate (Seinfeld?). The main plot is her fight to get her daughter back. Her husband moves a lot, trying to get her off their back. But Erin Grant (Demi Moore) keeps finding them. One "fan" of Grant's is a guy who wants to help her get her daughter back. However, when he approaches a crazy senator (played hilariously by Burt Reynolds), they kill him. The guy saw the senator in the stripbar and they didn't want it revealed.

The cast is wonderful and very talented, except for one. Demi Moore should not have been cast as the lead. I actually blame this mistake on the writers who turned her character into a sympathetic and unfunny mother, instead of how the character was originally written. She also has a couple topless scenes that don't affect the viewers as the producers must have though. We have seen Moore before in movies such as Indecent Proposal. The dance choreography is okay and the nudity has been seen before (Indecent Proposal). Burt Reynolds is the scene-stealer of the movie. He has fun with his part and it shows. Ving Rhames is also hilarious, especially in his own little sub-plot about a yogurt company.

The movie is very funny when it wants to be. However, when the movie turns into a drama about getting her daughter back, the movie tends to sag a little. There are moments in the movie where I was bored, and there were a lot of them. Then it jumped into a comedic moment and the movie bounced back from its slump. Unfortunately, there aren't enough moments in the movie to make the movie really good. Some major script changes could have saved the movie, and so would have recasting the lead role. I'm almost tired of seeing Moore topless.

Striptease is rated R. There is plenty of topless scenes to please all the guys. There is some violence (a snake tries to kill a stripper) and language. Most people think the nudity is the star of the show, but I suggest you watch for the plot. That's what I found interesting. But the nude women also were interesting to watch as well.
